Little hiccups of freelancing

I've been struggling with wifi issues for almost the past week.  These are the little hiccups of freelancing -- the fact that sometimes, usually when you least expect it, something can happen to render you unable to work (or work effectively).

Luckily, the new modem should be here soon, but in the meantime I've let clients know the situation, and gotten a few extensions on deadlines.  I've spent some time at local coffee shops, but because I've been so busy lately, coffee shop hours have been an issue -- and of course, the wifi likes best to conk out at night, when I don't have many alternatives available to me.

When I freelanced full-time it wasn't as big a deal, because I was usually working during the day.  There were a few times when I had to go to a cafe to get wifi (or air conditioning, or electricity).  It didn't usually pose much of a problem, and as I actually benefit from a change of scenery periodically when I'm working, it could be a good thing as well.

These are the times when I'm glad I have a laptop.  If the power goes out, it doesn't affect me as much, and I can take my work with me if I need to go elsewhere to get wifi.  I've thought before about getting a battery to run the modem during power outages, but so far I haven't felt I needed to.

What about you?  How do you combat the little hiccups of working from home?
