Taking sick days

I was extremely ill over the weekend. If what I had wasn't the flu, then it was the worst cold I've ever had. I was pretty much incapacitated for both Sunday and Monday, and although I felt better yesterday, I was still weak and lethargic. Therefore I decided to take the day off and spent it camped out on the couch, watching movies.

While I was sick (and over the weekend, I might add), I got an email from a client asking about his article. This brought to mind a question that I wanted to put to my readers: How do you deal with sick days? Do you let all of your current clients know you're taking time off because you're sick? Or do you only let them know if it's going to interfere with a deadline?

I tend to think only the latter is necessary. Particularly over a holiday weekend. But what are your thoughts?

If I have deadlines to meet, I work even when I'm sick. If I'm feeling particularly ill (as with the flu), I'll take a day or two off when deadlines aren't looming, but I don't feel the need to tell my clients that I'm doing so.

Kathy, I have to admit I'll usually work when I'm sick, too. But I was really sick this weekend. I could have had some pretty pressing deadlines, and I still don't think I would have been coherent enough to work.

Interesting that you don't let your clients know. I usually do -- perhaps I've been encouraging way too much dependency, and that's why some of them freak out when I disappear over a holiday weekend. ;o)

Hi Katharine.

I rarely tell clients, but it depends on how sick I am and if I believe it might affect the deadline. I haven't missed a deadline yet, but I've had a few times during a heavy deadline crunch that I've become crazy sick. I usually take the day off, checking e-mails occasionally. If I've not responded to e-mails as quickly as I usually do, I'll say something like, "Sorry for the delay in responding, but I got knocked off my feet with..." whatever. I just don't want people to think that a slower-than-usual response time is just me slacking.

Gabriella, oops, sorry I missed your comment back when you posted it! I was sick...this entire time. Ha ha -- just kidding! ;o)

Haven't missed a deadline yet? Wow -- you go, girl!
