I got sick over the weekend, and despite getting a lot of sleep, it's been hanging on this week. I think it's probably because I went back to my usual schedule, in which I only get around seven hours of sleep a night -- not really enough if I'm fighting an illness at the same time.
When it started on Friday, I thought it was just a cold, but then on Saturday I was fairly sure I had a fever. I didn't get my hands on a thermometer until I had already taken an ibuprofen, but I still had a low fever at that time, so I'm guessing it had been higher before.
I slept most of the weekend, but yesterday I had to go back to my usual schedule, thinking I'd be better.
Now I'm thinking that was probably a mistake. I was congested and tired yesterday, and today is much the same. I probably needed another day in bed to really kick this thing.
So yesterday I didn't really get much in the way of client work done, just made it through my day and went to bed. I had plans in the evening, so bedtime wasn't as early as it'll be, say, tonight -- and I think I'll be eschewing client work in favor of rest tonight, too. I don't have anything due for another day at least, so taking some time to recover should be okay, and probably best in the long run.
I'm glad I don't have a lot of deadlines to worry about when I'm sick, but I usually just go ahead and ask for the extra time when it happens. I can be kind of a baby when I'm sick, but part of it is because I've learned I get better a lot faster if I just rest.
What about you? How do you handle sick days as a freelance writer?
